New R1.4 million Mercedes-Benz Coupé launching in South Africa

 ·8 Nov 2023

Mercedes-Benz has announced the prices of its GLC Coupé, ranging from R1.39 million to over R1.4 million.

“The Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe undoubtedly resonates with the affluent South African clientele. It speaks to that desire for adventure, both in the urban environment and the greater outdoors. The design is both contemporary and dynamic, as it is the ultimate lifestyle accessory from the world’s most innovative and luxurious automotive brand,” said Mark Raine, co-CEO of Mercedes-Benz South Africa.

Features

The second version of the SUV features several notable design changes. The LED headlights are now thinner and directly connected to the grille, while the two-part taillights are attached to each other with a dark red strip.

The grille itself is now covered in the Mercedes Star pattern. In the base Avantgarde variant, the exterior design stands out with chrome finishes, black wheel arch mouldings, and 18-inch light alloy wheels.

Stepping up to the AMG Line variant, buyers can enjoy more aggressive bumpers, 19 or 20-inch alloys, and body-coloured wheel arches. Once inside, buyers will appreciate a range of features, including:

  • Heated front seats;
  • Wireless charging, ambient lighting, and dual-zone climate control;
  • Artico man-made leather upholstery;
  • Wn electric tailgate;
  • A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and an 11.9-inch MBUX infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto; and
  • An intelligent voice assistant.

The driver can also take advantage of a variety of assistance systems, such as active distance assist which maintains a pre-set distance between the vehicle and the one ahead, active steering assist, and traffic sign assist.

Optional add-ons include:

  • A panoramic sunroof with a 6cm-longer opening space than the standard GLC;
  • Thermal insulation glass for an even quieter cabin;
  • Running boards for easier entry;
  • The Energizing Plus package with seven comfort programmes; and
  • Exclusively for the AMG Line, a Night Package with darkened exterior styling cues.

Performance

The new GLC Coupe, similar to the standard GLC and the previous GLC Coupe, will be available in 2.0-litre turbo-diesel 220d and 300d. These engines are equipped with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and an integrated starter generator for the second generation, which allows for hybrid-specific functions like coasting, boosting, and energy recovery.

All powertrains are paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and a 4Matic all-wheel-drive program.

Additionally, the company has added an off-road mode with downhill speed regulation and a new off-road screen that offers a “transparent bonnet” feature, using the 360-degree camera system to enable the driver to see what’s going on in front of the coupe’s nose.

To enhance its dust-busting abilities, buyers have the option of fitting rear-axle steering (up to 4.5 degrees) for added agility, Airmatic air suspension, and the trailer manoeuvring assistant.

With a length of 4,763 mm, it is 31 mm longer and 5 mm higher than its predecessor. The track widths are larger, by 6 mm at the front (now 1,627 mm) and 23 mm at the rear (now 1,640 mm).

The longer vehicle length benefits the wheelbase and the front and rear overhangs. The width has remained the same at 1,890 mm.

The engineering package (optional) with AIRMATIC air suspension including level control and rear-axle steering also brings its comfort advantages to bear when off-road, where it offers additional benefits.

For example, AIRMATIC allows a high ground clearance off-road, regardless of the load, and long suspension travel for the best possible traction. The rear-axle steering increases off-road manoeuvrability even further.
