FNB looking to expand Smart ID and passport branches in South Africa

 ·5 Jun 2023

The partnership between the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) and South Africa’s major banks for providing Smart IDs and Passports has been highly successful, with one of the biggest partners, FNB, looking to work with the government to expand the services further.

The bank revealed in April that the pilot partnership that enables the banks to host DHA satellite offices was extended to September 2023.

“Our ambition is to continue working with the Department to expand this important service to more sites or branches across our footprint,” the bank said.

FNB said that, through its partnership with the DHA, it has issued over 400,000 Smart IDs and passports at its branches since 2015. It has issued over 190,000 Smart IDs and 230,000 passports across seven participating branches to date.

“We are humbled by how our customers have continued to embrace this service by collecting their IDs and passports at our branches. This collaboration provides a great framework to improve access to essential services, which have a fundamental social and economic impact,” said FNB head of Points of Presence, Lee-Anne van Zyl.

“An identity document is key to accessing economic opportunities such as employment, financial services, and even mobile telecommunications,” she said.

Van Zyl also clarified how South Africans can book appointments to make use of the service at the bank’s branches.

The booking process for ID and passport documents is facilitated through eChannel, a Home Affairs online booking portal that captures the applicant’s personal details, not through FNB directly.

FNB said that customers can apply via the DHA’s online booking system and then collect their IDs and passports at the participating branches.

Customers will then schedule a time to visit their chosen branch for fingerprint verification after the application is processed online.

An SMS confirmation will notify the consumer when the document is ready for collection.

Where South Africans can go

There are currently 27 branches where South Africans can get their Smart IDs and Passports, with Standard Bank having the most DHA-supported locations:

  • Standard Bank — 9
  • FNB — 7
  • Nedbank — 5
  • Absa — 4
  • Discovery Bank — 1
  • Investec — 1

Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi previously said that the department wants to add 43 more offices at bank branches once a memorandum of Understanding (MoU) relating to a Public Private Partnership (PPP) Service Level Agreement (SLA) was signed.

Nedbank said that its customers are currently only able to apply for ID documents at Nedbank branches that represent the DHA, however, once put into place, the SLA agreement may include other services for clients, even if the bank branch is not associated with the DHA site.

Until the SLA is signed into place, here are all the locations where South Africans can get their Smart ID or passport.
