WhatsApp is planning to bring broad changes to the popular South African communication app.

According to WABetaInfo, a data service, WhatsApp is introducing new features like filter chat list, group suggestions, improved video calls and more.

In South Africa, WhatsApp remains a highly popular messaging platform for various groups and conversations.

The app’s frequent updates and beta testing contributes to its appeal, it is also both available for free on both the iOS App Store and Google Play Store.

WABetaInfo, known for tracking WhatsApp’s developer activities, has highlighted the following modifications:

Filter chat list

WhatsApp is planning to work on bringing a filter bar to a future update of the app. The new feature aims to address the challenge of filtering chats between subcategories such as all chats, unread, personal and business.

“Group chats play a crucial role in communication for many WhatsApp users, and having a convenient way to filter and access them would greatly enhance the overall user experience,” said WABetaInfo.

Group suggestions

“WhatsApp is working on the ability to suggest groups to community admins, and it will be available in the future,” says WABetaInfo.

Users will soon have the ability to propose groups to community administrators.

Once a suggestion is received, the admin can choose to add the suggested group to the community, facilitating the discovery of new groups for other community members, said the service.

Large video calls

WhatsApp is also currently rolling out a new feature for large video calls.

“The app supported group video calls with up to eight people and audio calls with up to 32 people, and that WhatsApp could raise these limits in the future in order to make it easier for users to experience better communication,” said WABetaInfo.

The planned feature was available firstly to beta testers however is now being released to more people over the coming days.

Message editing

WABetaInfo said that WhatsApp is currently rolling out a feature to edit messages.

“With this feature, WhatsApp provides users with a new tool to fix their typos without deleting the wrong message,” said WABetaInfo.

Editing would be allowed within a 15-minute timeframe from sending them, with the freedom to make an unlimited number of edits.

Redesigned GIF and Sticker picker

WhatsApp is currently rolling out a redesigned GIF and Sticker picker that would result in some changes to the keyboard, in particular, the extended picker view.

“This latest feature introduces the ability to scroll the picker upwards, allowing users to conveniently access a larger grid of items,” said WABetaInfo.
