Eskom cuts load shedding to stage 3 – here’s the new weekend schedule

 ·1 Dec 2023

Power utility Eskom says that, due to the sustained improvement of the generation capacity overnight, load shedding will be eased on Friday and over the weekend.

With unplanned outages at 13,542MW, load shedding will be reduced to stage 2 from 10h00 on Friday until 16h00.

Thereafter, stage 3 load shedding will be implemented from 16h00 on Friday until 05h00 on Sunday when outages will be suspended from 05h00 until 16h00.

On Sunday, stage 3 load shedding will resume from 16h00 until 05h00 on Monday.

“Eskom will communicate the update on the week ahead on Sunday afternoon,” the group said.

This rapid de-escalation follows a surprise jump to stage 5 and 6 during the week, with the utility anticipating on Thursday that stage 5 load shedding would continue through to Sunday.

The group has been struggling to balance high levels of outages, diesel shortages and tapped-out emergency reserves amid growing user demand.

Given the haphazard changes to the load shedding schedules over the last 24 hours, and the apparent instability of Eskom’s grid, South Africans should anticipate further changes over the coming days.

For now, the load shedding schedule is as follows:

Friday, 1 December

  • Stage 2: 10h00 to 16h00
  • Stage 3: 16h00 to 00h00

Saturday, 2 December

  • Stage 3: 00h00 to 00h00

Sunday, 3 December

  • Stage 3: 00h00 to 05h00
  • Suspended: 05h00 to 16h00
  • Stage 3: 16h00 to 00h00
