Mercedes-Benz pumps R40 million into electric charging network in South Africa

Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA), in partnership with Chargify, will be building 127 new local electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across South Africa valued at R40 million.

The German automaker noted that it will introduce a blend of both AC and DC plug points in two phases to facilitate long-distance electric vehicle driving.

The first phase involves the installation of 67 Mercedes-Benz EQ branded charging stations across the country by quarter one of 2024.

“This investment is aimed at not only providing current customers with a reliable charging network but also instilling confidence in those considering the switch to electric vehicle ownership,” said MBSA.

The second phase will see the implementation of over 60 additional charging stations, bringing the total to 127 Mercedes-Benz EQ-branded charging stations, strategically positioned in key areas.

Confirmed MBSA/Chargify grid locations include:

• BT Ngebs Mall, Mthatha
• Champagne Castle, Drakensberg
• Courtyard Hotel, Sandton
• Da Vinci Hotel, Sandton
• Highwayman’s Garage, Pilgrims Rest
• Karoo Junction Mall, Beaufort West
• Mayfair Hotel, Mthatha
• Plettenberg Hotel, Plettenberg Bay
• Swartberg Hotel, Prince Albert
• Silvermist Wine Estate, Hout Bay
• Wilderness Hotel, Wilderness
• Woodhill Estate and Country Club, Pretoria

“Mercedes-Benz South Africa and Chargify are both actively working to build South Africa’s most extensive EV public charging network. As the demand for EVs continues to grow, ensuring a robust infrastructure is essential,” said MBSA.

The MBSA/Chargify network will be available to every EV driver regardless of the brand of vehicle they own. However, all Mercedes-Benz EQ customers will benefit from a 10% discount when using these stations.
