New bank branches for Smart ID and Passports in South Africa coming very soon

 ·14 Nov 2023

Home Affairs says that South Africa’s banks are finally ready to sign partnership agreements with the department to fully launch the eHome Affairs system.

This will see participating banks give effect to the full concept of the pilot project and will increase the footprint of bank branches that will be activated.

“The Banking Association of South Africa has confirmed to the department after many years of deliberations that the banks are now ready to sign the partnership agreements,” the department said.

“The signing of the partnership agreement will, therefore, increase the footprint of bank branches that will be activated, as the agreement comes with infrastructure and human resources from the banks.”

The eHome Affairs pilot with he banks was launched in 2015, which allowed the banks to provide and alternative channel to engage with the department, expanding its services.

It allows banking customers to book appointments on the digital platform to apply for and process Smart IDs and passports without having to step foot into a Home Affairs office.

The system has been in operation for eight years, with “periodical upgrades” being made. Over 3.5 million South Africans have used the bank branch system for the Smart IDs and passports, the department said.

The pilot was expected to end in March 2023, after which around 43 new bank branches were primed for rollout for the services.

However, this target was missed, and the pilot was extended to September 2023. In September, the department announced that the pilot would again be extended to March 2024.

Commentary from the banks has been positive, with the services proving to be popular among clients. However, the pilot has also been accompanied by typical Home Affairs problems like system downtime – which was flagged as a reputation risk for the participating groups.

Despite this, the department is now confident that a full-scale launch is imminent.

The DHA currently lists 27 participating bank branches on its website, but confirmation from the banks shows that at least 30 branches are offering services.

The total breakdown of 30 branches is as follows:

  • Standard Bank: 9
  • FNB: 7
  • Absa: 6
  • Nedbank: 6
  • Investec Bank: 1
  • Discovery Bank: 1
