Where to get the best Black Friday deals to beat load shedding

 ·20 Nov 2023

South Africans will likely be subjected to load shedding for a while longer – but several retailers are lessening the blow by offering Black Friday deals.

Although government officials assure the public that Eskom’s performance is improving, data from independent energy analyst Pieter Jordaan shows that Eskom’s plant performance is still weak as grid stability rests on demand.

Jordaan said that the group’s unplanned outages (breakdowns, or UCLF) are above 30% of all capacity – far higher than the 20% limit from the national energy regulator Nersa.

“At those levels, a small increase in demand will make life pretty miserable for all of us,” he said.

With Eskom’s continued struggles, many South Africans will thus be turning to alternative power systems to keep their lights on.

In a small boost for consumers amidst a challenging year, several in-store and online retailers are also offering Black Friday deals on alternative power systems.

Some of these retailers offering Black Friday deals include:

Avo

Nedbank’s online retail store Avo is offering discounts on energy-related products.

This includes 39% off the EcoFlow River 2 Max Portable Power Station – bringing the price down to R7,899 (R7,109 with Greenbacks) – and 11% off the Mecer 12 Volt IVR 1,200 (720 W) to R7,999.

Those who shop Black Friday deals will also stand a chance to win a BetterShop 1.6 kW pure sinewave hybrid inverter worth R5,600 or a Engauge 1,200 VA inverter worth R6,600.

Builders

Builders are also offering exclusive alternative energy system deals.

This includes R11,000 off the Gentech Digital Pure Sine Wave Inverter (3000W) to R18,999.

A Gentech 7.5kVA Petrol Generator has also had its price slashed by R9,000 to R13,990.

EcoFlow

Despite being sold by other retailers, EcoFlow – the maker of portable power stations – is making its own Black Friday sale.

The company will do a flash sale on Black Friday, which will reduce the DELTA 2 and DELTA 2 Smart Extra Battery from R38,998 to R28,999.

Gizzu

Gizzu is running a Black November – “Black Out” – sale and has discounted items from its lowest to its top range.

This sale ranges from its 4X Gizzu Voltage Protector 16A going down to R549.00 from R916.00 to its Gizzu Hero Pro 2048WH/2400W UPS dropping to R22,999.00 from R24,999.00

Makro

The Massmart-owned retailer is also offering discounts on backup power systems.

This includes a R2,000 discount on the Ecoflow 1,024w Delta 2 Lithium Portable Power Station and R5,500 off the Magneto 1,200W Portable Power Station.

Leroy Merlin

Hardware retailer Leroy Merlin is also offering backup power deals.

The most interesting of which is the nearly R200,000 off the Huawei Isitepower-M 1PH Backup Kit 5KW Inverter 15KWh Battery Li-Ion. This brings the price down from R341,979 to R149,999.

Hohm Energy

Solar provider Hohm Energy is also offering a Black Friday deal on its subscription service.

In the deal, subscribers will get the next 6 December’s worth of solar energy free.

Ugreen

UPS company Ugreen has several products on sale on Takealot.

As part of the Early Access Blue Dot Sale, the price of the Ugreen PowerRoam UPS 600W 680Wh LiFePO4 Portable Power Station has been slashed by R4,000 to R9,999.

The Ugreen PowerRoam UPS 2200W 2048Wh LiFePO4 Portable Power Station has also been marked down by R6,000 to R23,999.
