In this Business Talk with Michael Avery interview, Lesley-Anne Gatter – Global Head of People and Organisation at Investec – discusses how the working world is shifting.

Gatter joined Investec in 2006 as a Learning Consultant and in 2007 she moved into the role of Head of Learning and Development.

She then became the Head of People and Organisation for Investec’s South African business in 2016, and in 2022 she stepped into this role for the Investec Group globally.

In her current role, Gatter oversees the implementation of the Investec employee value proposition and is a member of the Group Executive Team.

She is passionate about organisational culture and design, creating purpose-led organisations, and enabling exceptional individual and team performance.

Gatter holds a Master’s degree in psychology from the University of the Witwatersrand and has worked in various NGOs and academic settings.

The interview

In her Business Talk interview, Gatter discusses the changes to career paths observed in 2023.

She explains that Investec is seeing a huge shift in the regulatory and technology areas, and this means it is looking for talent in new industries – such as the FMCG sector.

Gatter then discusses what is driving talent acquisition and retention in the modern workplace – including at Investec.

She also unpacks how technology and hybrid working has affected the building and maintaining of a strong work culture.

Gatter concludes that Investec has found it best to continue to nurture an in-office culture that allows for flexibility in the form of its novel leave structure.
