Eskom suspending load shedding this weekend

 ·10 Nov 2023

Power utility Eskom says that it will suspend load shedding this weekend thanks to lower demand.

Due to the anticipated lower weekend electricity demand and adequate emergency reserves, Stage 2 load shedding will be implemented from 16h00 on Friday until 05h00 on Saturday, as previously communicated.

Thereafter, load shedding will be suspended until 16:00 on Monday (13 November).

An update on the outlook for the next week will be announced on Sunday.

Eskom will communicate should any significant changes occur.

Eskom has managed to maintain a stage 2 / suspended rotation for load shedding this week, largely thanks to reduced demand compared to the week before.

Analysis of the group’s plant performance has shown that the utility has had to make some sacrifices to keep load shedding at bay. Most notably, during peaks in demand, Eskom has either had to burn through diesel, or reduce its planned maintenance to keep things balanced.

Eskom’s acting CEO Calib Cassim has made it clear that the group’s goal is to cap load shedding at stage 4, and to go further and suspend outages during the day.

The group’s summer plan has also been set on having a ‘base case’ scenario of keeping load shedding maxed out at stage 4, premised on having breakdowns and outages not exceeding 14,000MW.

However, the data shows that Eskom has very little manoeuvrability when it comes to maintaining this.
